Because I am a Girl I ask…that all girls start treating other girls with the same respect we expect from men. That we stop judging and criticising each other on our looks, weight or clothes and start embracing our differences. That we stop gossiping and start being kind and supportive of other girls.

Because I am a Girl I believe…that everyone has the power to make a difference. Normal people at grassroots level have so much power and potential to make a real change in our communities and, consequently, in the whole world. Find a cause you are passionate about and do whatever you can, however little it feels, you will find a way. If everyone did a little, the world would be a much better place.

Because I am a Girl I hope…that there will be a day when feminism is no longer needed in any part of the world.

Because I am a Girl I wonder…how one side of the world lives in excess where people die as a consequence of overindulgence while on the other side people die of hunger.

Because I am a Girl I dream…of a day when no girl ever has to suffer at the hands of man, anywhere in the world, physically or emotionally.

Because I am a Girl I remember…the day I became a mother. It was the day I really found myself and knew I have everything in the world I ever need. I was also grateful I had the luxury of choosing when I want to become a mother (or if I want it at all) and it made me remember all the girls I’ve met on my travels who don’t have the freedom to choose.

Because I am a Girl I like…to explore the world. I like to see how differently people live in different places, how different cultures are but how ultimately, people are all the same. I have met some amazing women on my travels and it is inspiring to see how it’s the women who usually hold families and communities together, who make things happen and take action, when things get tough.

Because I am a Girl I dislike…greed. Greed is at the root of all suffering in the world. If there was no greed, there would be no people dying of hunger or easily preventable diseases like malaria and most certainly Ireland wouldn’t be in the situation we now find ourselves.

Because I am a Girl I feel…strong and determined. I know what I want to do, I know I can make a change in other women’s lives and I know I can do much more. I know there will be obstacles but as long as I stay true to myself, they’re not going to stand in my way.

Because I am a Girl I celebrate…being a girl. I feel as a girl, I have more choices over who I want to be/what I want to do than I would have if I wear a man. I can choose if I want to have a career or be a stay at home mother; I could be an astronaut or a nurse; I can be strong but I can also be vulnerable and break down in tears; I can have long hair or short hair, wear skirts or trousers…in many ways, society places more expectations on men to be a certain way these days. I just wish all girls everywhere would have the choices we have in Ireland!

  • Because I am a Girl...

I have a much higher chance of making headline news - as a victim of rape, assault or murder. But because I am a girl I have the innate strength to carry on challenging the threats to my freedom.

  • Because I am a Girl...

I rise to the challenge, and do the unexpected. I raise my voice so that I can always be heard. I push myself even when the little voices in my head are saying, sure you dont belong here, who do you think you are. I struggle on and dont alllow society to to label or box me because of the sex I am, the colour of my skin, my sexuality, my spiritual beliefs. I am, and I will.
