Sorcha Heron, Newstalk

Sorcha Heron currently works in Newstalk 106-108fm as acting deputy station editor. She has been working in radio for the past 7 years. After graduating from UCD with a degree in History and Politics, she travelled to Japan to teach English for 3 years. The first word she learnt in Japanese was ‘gokiburi’ which means cockroach – they are gigantic over there.

Because I am a Girl I ask…for everyone to be a feminist but also to wear a bra if necessary.

Because I am a Girl I believe…I am lucky not to have been born in the Victorian age when the vibrator was invented to ‘cure’ hysterical women.

Because I am a Girl I hope…to have the privilege of being a working mother one day.

Because I am a Girl I wonder…when we’ll have a female Taoiseach.

Because I am a Girl I dream…quite often with my make-up still on.

Because I am a Girl I remember…to stand on my own two feet and never expect anyone to pay my way.

Because I am a Girl I like…expressing myself freely through my choice of friends, lovers, fashion, travel and how I choose to have fun.

Because I am a Girl I dislike…ignorance, particularly of the misogynistic variety; and hair removal – it hurts like hell.

Because I am a Girl I feel…a problem shared is a problem halved.

Because I am a Girl I celebrate…my birthday as a mini-festival, usually over a whole weekend with family and friends.

  • Because I am a Girl...

I have a much higher chance of making headline news - as a victim of rape, assault or murder. But because I am a girl I have the innate strength to carry on challenging the threats to my freedom.

  • Because I am a Girl...

I rise to the challenge, and do the unexpected. I raise my voice so that I can always be heard. I push myself even when the little voices in my head are saying, sure you dont belong here, who do you think you are. I struggle on and dont alllow society to to label or box me because of the sex I am, the colour of my skin, my sexuality, my spiritual beliefs. I am, and I will.
