An independent consumer expert, Tina Leonard is Ireland’s foremost consumer champion. She dispenses consumer advice and information weekly via her Smart Consumer column in the Irish Independent and on RTE Radio 1’s Today with Pat Kenny programme, and has delivered a consumer segment on RTE’s Four Live (and formerly The Afternoon Show) since 2005.
A previous Director of Ireland’s European Consumer Centre, Tina is the author of Your Consumer Rights in Ireland.

Because I am a Girl I ask…that all girls worldwide have access to education and choice in life.
Because I am a Girl I believe… in the strength of girls and women; to make their own choices and to be leaders, while also retaining their compassion and kindness.
Because I am a Girl I hope… for full equality between the sexes and for equality to just ‘be’ as opposed to being an ‘issue’.
Because I am a Girl I wonder… if my bum looks big in this and whether I really should buy another eyeliner/lipstick/top (insert as you wish!). Of course I also wonder about writing that report or balancing the budget; there is time for all.
Because I am a Girl I dream… of clothes and boys, or boys and clothes. But I also dream of career achievement and success in life doing whatever I would like to do.
Because I am a Girl I remember.. .to respect the girls and women who have come before me in more difficult times, and who have paved the way for me.
Because I am a Girl I like… chatting and shopping and all those typical things; but there are multiple aspects to everyone and so I like not to be taken for granted or stereotyped.
Because I am a Girl I dislike… when men act as though they are superior; don’t they realise that we’re all great in our different ways and that difference does not equal inferiority.
Because I am a Girl I feel… fantastic. Girls have strength and intelligence and tend to be more empathetic – what a combination.
Because I am a Girl I celebrate…with more heart.
