Natasha Duffy, Spirit of Folk Festival

Natasha Duffy is festival coordinator for the Spirit of Folk Festival, a three-day, family friendly festival running from 21st - 23rd September in Dunderry Park, Co Meath. Shortlisted in 2011 for ‘Best New Festival’ in the European Festival awards, Spirit of Folk returns next weekend with a unique slant on the traditional Irish camping festival. The festival prides itself on its dedication to all things folk, and promises to celebrate the harvest season in style.

Having started her education in Film Production, Natasha discovered an affinity for spreadsheets and ticking off to-do lists and ventured into the world of event management. She has worked for the walks and treks department of MS Ireland and before embarking on the Spirit of Folk Festival, worked with the Bealtaine Festival which celebrates creativity in older people. For more information on the festival visit www.spiritoffolk.com, check out their Facebook page www.facebook.com/spiritoffolkfestival or follow the festival on Twitter @Spirit_of_Folk

Because I am a Girl I ask…for everyone to understand each others individual troubles and to try a wee bit every day to help someone.

Because I am a Girl I believe…that all people should be treated with compassion.

Because I am a Girl I hope…there comes a day when people across the world do not have to face the threat of violence; sexual, domestic or through war.

Because I am a Girl I wonder…why I never have matching socks!

Because I am a Girl I dream…of a contented future where I am suddenly good at gardening, baking and cleaning (its not likely to happen soon!)

Because I am a Girl I remember…my first time falling in love.

Because I am a Girl I like…clothes, films, music, dancing and most recently UFC!

Because I am a Girl I dislike…bullies, or anyone trying to take advantage of someone.

Because I am a Girl I feel…a lot! Love, sadness, fear, hope and coming up to the festival NERVOUS EXCITEMENT!

Because I am a Girl I celebrate…all the people out there willing to stand up for someone in need. It takes guts and should always be noticed.

  • Because I am a Girl...

I have a much higher chance of making headline news - as a victim of rape, assault or murder. But because I am a girl I have the innate strength to carry on challenging the threats to my freedom.

  • Because I am a Girl...

I rise to the challenge, and do the unexpected. I raise my voice so that I can always be heard. I push myself even when the little voices in my head are saying, sure you dont belong here, who do you think you are. I struggle on and dont alllow society to to label or box me because of the sex I am, the colour of my skin, my sexuality, my spiritual beliefs. I am, and I will.
