Mo recently had the honour of presenting actor and Ireland’s cultural ambassador Gabriel Byrne with one of her paintings at Ard Scoil Eanna, the school her grandfather founded.

The right to education for all is something that is in Mo’s blood, she comes from a family of teachers. Her next project and exhibition aims to continue to raise funds for her late mother’s school for girls in Pakistan.

Because I am a Girl I ask…and expect a lot from myself.

Because I am a Girl I believe…that people are inherently good.

Because I am a Girl I hope…that very soon it won’t matter at all that I am a girl, its an obvious point, but we don’t have any choice how we are born, rather, its our choices that define us.

Because I am a Girl I wonder…why we are so hard on ourselves and why we listen to and are affected by one sided, silly and sexist advertising.

Because I am a Girl I dream…of a day when gender is off the agenda.

Because I am a Girl I remember…to always take my make up off before I go to bed.

Because I am a Girl I like…glitter.

Because I am a Girl I dislike…injustice and how women and children are always the first victims.

Because I am a Girl I feel…we must invest in girls in the developing world. look at how a society treats its’ girls and women, when they are mistreated the whole of that society suffers, the poorest countries, the war -torn countries, the dangerous countries, are all countries where women are oppressed. This is not just a women’s issue, its a human rights issue for all mankind and for the very survival of all mankind.

Because I am a Girl I…can’t close my eyes to the inequality and suffering inflicted on girls and women around the developing world, but girls themselves are the key to the solution, through their education and empowerment, both sexes will reap the benefits of economic growth and stability and will one day stand side by side, equal and on common ground…

  • Because I am a Girl...

I have a much higher chance of making headline news - as a victim of rape, assault or murder. But because I am a girl I have the innate strength to carry on challenging the threats to my freedom.

  • Because I am a Girl...

I rise to the challenge, and do the unexpected. I raise my voice so that I can always be heard. I push myself even when the little voices in my head are saying, sure you dont belong here, who do you think you are. I struggle on and dont alllow society to to label or box me because of the sex I am, the colour of my skin, my sexuality, my spiritual beliefs. I am, and I will.
