Dara McClatchie, Producer

Dara McClatchie is a producer working and living in Dublin and is MD of Big Fish Productions.

She studied film at the DIT and recently completed an MA in International Relations in her spare time.  She has worked all over the world filming for and with clients on all five continents. She spent a fantastic couple of years in Nairobi working with Sounds and Pictures establishing that company as a regional market leader.

Dara is the very proud mother of a boy and a girl.

Because I am a Girl I ask… to be treated equally: not judged on my gender, race, age or appearance.

Because I am a Girl I believe… that the right to work should not be at the expense of the right to be a parent.

Because I am a Girl I hope… that my daughter will have all of the same opportunities as my son and that neither will be judged on the colour of their skin.

Because I am a Girl I wonder… when equality between boys and girls will be a reality and not just an aspiration.

Because I am a Girl I dream… of finding a comfortable balance between being a mother and a business woman.

Because I am a Girl I remember… the amazing women who went before me and paved the way for my generation.

Because I am a Girl I like… having choices that weren’t an option for my mother.

Because I am a Girl I dislike… sometimes having to choose between my family and my work.

Because I am a Girl I feel… great! I love that I have the opportunity to lead many different lives within one.

Because I am a Girl I… encourage women to support each other.  Yes, we can do it all, there’s no question about that, but it’s very hard to have it all.  We need to support each other’s choices to be what we want to be and to be what we can be whether that’s a woman staying at home raising her children, a woman blazing a trail in the business world or a woman trying to manage both.  As importantly, we need to support women both at home and abroad whose struggles don’t involve choices about work and family but instead are much more basic struggles for survival, equality and respect – both their own and their children’s.

  • Because I am a Girl...

I have a much higher chance of making headline news - as a victim of rape, assault or murder. But because I am a girl I have the innate strength to carry on challenging the threats to my freedom.

  • Because I am a Girl...

I rise to the challenge, and do the unexpected. I raise my voice so that I can always be heard. I push myself even when the little voices in my head are saying, sure you dont belong here, who do you think you are. I struggle on and dont alllow society to to label or box me because of the sex I am, the colour of my skin, my sexuality, my spiritual beliefs. I am, and I will.
