Mary White (TD), Minister for State

Mary White is an Irish Green Party politician. She was elected to Dáil Éireann at the 2007 general election making her the first female TD elected for the Green party and for the Carlow–Kilkenny constituency.

White was born in County Wicklow, educated at the Ursuline Convent, Waterford and Trinity College, Dublin.

On 23 March 2010, following a cabinet reshuffle, she was appointed as Minister of State at the Department of Justice and Law Reform, the Department of Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs and the Department of Education and Skills with special responsibility for Equality and Human Rights, and Integration.

Because I am a Girl I ask… that all girls have the freedom that I have.

Because I am a Girl I believe… that we should all be equal.

Because I am a Girl I hope… for an end to war, an end to domestic violence, an end to hunger and an end to poverty.

Because I am a Girl I wonder… at the inequality still in this world despite the advances we have made.

Because I am a Girl I dream… that we can fulfil our wishes, our hopes and deepest held aspirations.

Because I am a Girl I remember… my happy childhood with my sister and brothers.

Because I am a Girl I like… being a female politician so that I encourage more women to enter politics.

Because I am a Girl I dislike… gender-based violence, sexual innuendo and the trafficking of women.

Because I am a Girl I feel… impelled to make a difference in my job for girls in Ireland and, where possible, for girls all over the world.

Because I am a Girl I… know the possibilities are limitless for the women of the world, we just need to work together to make it happen.

  • Because I am a Girl...

I have a much higher chance of making headline news - as a victim of rape, assault or murder. But because I am a girl I have the innate strength to carry on challenging the threats to my freedom.

  • Because I am a Girl...

I rise to the challenge, and do the unexpected. I raise my voice so that I can always be heard. I push myself even when the little voices in my head are saying, sure you dont belong here, who do you think you are. I struggle on and dont alllow society to to label or box me because of the sex I am, the colour of my skin, my sexuality, my spiritual beliefs. I am, and I will.
